When entering a wine shop, many people, including myself are intimidated with the bottles, labels and unpronounceable words. Early on when I started getting interested in wine, I gravitated towards the whimsical bottles of Molly Dooker. They looked friendly and fun, something I want wines to be, especially when I don’t know much about them.
Molly Dooker is run by a husband and wife team; Sparky and Sarah Marquis. I often tell my husband that they are my #couplegoals. Imagine, living in beautiful McLaren Vale Australia, making and creating wines all day? When I read their story on the MollyDooker website, I found it to be a story of true love and partnership that prevailed over financial hardship, starting over, and growing a successful business together. This is another reason I feel so drawn to the vineyard; after years of working for other people creating wine, the couple started their own brand and called it Molly Dooker- Australian slang to mean left handed- as both Sarah and Sparky are left handed.
The couple have even trade marked their own standard in wine making called The Marquis Fruit Weight.

“We make wines that make people go WOW, through attention to detail and commitment to excellence.” And what makes people go WOW is the Marquis Fruit Weight™.
Fruit Weight™ is the percentage of your palate (from the tip of your tongue going all the way back) that’s covered by the velvety sensation of fruit, before you experience any of the structural components of the wine.
A wine must have at least 65% Fruit Weight™ in order to be considered as a Mollydooker.
The velvety sensation is exactly what drew me into the world of MollyDooker. I thought I was not much for Merlots till I tried the Scooter which had seamless structure ( exactly what the description says!) and a velvety smoothness. The Scooter is one of my favorites for everyday drinking and won’t break the bank at around P1500 per bottle. All the others in this same price range; the Boxer, Two Left Feet and the Maitre D’ are all very approachable and perfect for everyday drinking.
The higher end wines offer more of the Marquis Fruit weight. If the entry level wines are at 65%, the higher end wines such as their flagship Velvet Glove, are at a whopping 98%. They also offer more complex flavors that any wine snob will appreciate.
For me, wines really conjure up memories and emotions. When I discovered Molly Dooker, we were in between homes, waiting for our new one to be finished. We were camped out at my mom’s house and made the trek into the city everyday. All we wanted to do at the end of the day was to relax with a good bottle of wine; nothing snobby or too complex, because life itself at that point was already complicated, but something relaxing and cheerful. Take a look at any label of Molly Dooker and the fun drawings on the label reflect what the wines inside taste like. Learning to love wine is truly a journey, and I started mine exploring the world of Molly Dooker. I am awfully glad I started somewhere friendly and colorful, if not, I could have been put off forever by labels I couldn’t pronounce. Starting off here makes one feel such a personal connection to the wine makers because, although I have never met them, their personalities seen to shine through in all aspects, from their labels, websites, to every bottle they create.
